The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival

Horse racing in Melbourne takes rather a back seat during winter and summer months as football and rugby take precedence. But during springtime racing is the most dominant sport in Australia and Melbourne ascends to its sporting throne.

The Spring Racing Festival is not only the best thoroughbred racing in Australia it is also an absolute feast of fashion and fun that is the envy of the world.

The love affair between the people of Melbourne and horse racing started right back in the 1850’s with the Gold Rush years, and the very first Melbourne Cup was won by a horse named Archer.

By the 1880’s racing at the fabulous Flemington course had reached epidemic proportions, when a quarter of the population of Melbourne, one hundred thousand people attended the carnival.
